Women and the Rwandan <i>gacaca</i> courts: gender, genocide and justice

Abstract This article examines the gacaca trials of women accused perpetrating Rwandan genocide, asking whether and how ideas about their gender impacted defences, testimonies experiences as defendants. It uses court reports 91 women; a set sources that provides novel insights into role in an African transitional justice system. These reveal – particularly female peacefulness passivity were commonly invoked by both wider trial participants. gendered not only helped to achieve acquittals, but they also contributed state's construction ‘truth’ narrative ordinary are capable genocide violence. Additionally, women's further function process: political tool made moral judgements contemporary domestic roles place within household.
